what is art monster magazine?

Art Monster Magazine is a space to share my journey as a writer and wannabe art monster. If we’re being honest - which, well, why not - no one will publish me so I decided to just do it myself. I want to share the books I’m reading, comment on cultural themes I’m noticing, and talk about female artists who are doing things I admire. Hopefully others will want to be part of this art-monster-loving community. I consider myself a feminist and so that means everything I write will be categorized as that, which I am ok with.

In good conscience, I can’t name this project Art Monster Magazine without mentioning the mother of this term, Jenny Offill, from her ever-so-inspiring novel, Dept. Of Speculation; nor can I go on without mentioning the subsequent cultural criticism texts (which I read first, whoops), Art Monsters: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art by Lauren Elkin & Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer.

If you’re curious, this is the quote that started it all:

“Women almost never become art monsters because art monsters only concern themselves with art, never mundane things. Nabokov didn’t even fold his own umbrella. Vera licked his stamps for him” - Jenny Offill, Dept. of Speculation

(Maybe this is all so I can get someone to lick my stamps for me?)

is this really a magazine?

I guess? Who decides what a magazine is anyway? The reason I labeled it a magazine is 1) it sounds better and 2) because, in a dreamy, wild world, I can post essays and such by others and fulfill my lifelong dream of being a “magazine editor” (you can thank my 13 Going on 30-loving-younger-self).
